Whether you are experienced with traveling or you are a new traveler, there are many decisions that must be made. Preparing your vacation is easier if you know exactly what to do and do not leave anything to chance. The following article contains travel tips and tricks for anyone interested in seeing the world.

If you are traveling and wear glasses, remember to take an extra pair with you in your luggage. This way, if your glasses break on your flight or on your trip, you have a spare pair. Do not pack them in your handbag or carry on luggage, just in case your bag were to get stolen.

When going to foreign countries, be smart about food allergies. If you do have an allergy, you will need to have a good handle on the language of the country you are eating in. If you do this, you can avoid ordering anything that you may be allergic to, and if need be, alert medical professionals of any allergies.

The National Park Pass is cost effective to purchase if you intend to visit National Parks on a regular basis throughout the year. While the initial outlay is $50, they are valid for a one year term and give you open access to all national parks.

A road trip is the perfect opportunity to listen to playlists of your favorite music, so do not forget to bring your CDs or MP3 player with you. Since you can never count on radio reception when you are traveling, this is a great way to ensure that you have music to listen to.

Always read relevant consumer reviews before choosing your accommodations when traveling. Planning ahead an avoiding potential pitfalls of choosing somewhere with a poor reputation will lessen your chances of having a nightmare of a vacation.

When making long road trips, rotate drivers as often as possible. Rotate drivers before you get tired, so that you will be awake enough to keep the other driver engaged in conversation. Never drive to the point of exhaustion. Try switching out drivers every couple hours. That way neither driver will run the risk of falling asleep at the wheel.

As discussed at the start of this article, travelers have a lot of different decisions to make, and the process of making those decisions can seem overwhelming. However, by following the advice contained in this article, you can rest assured you will be ready. If you follow these suggestions, you will be able to easily make travel plans.

From the moment you collect your hire car at the airport your exploration of Milan has begun. ?Drive to as many places as you can, see as much as you can, taste all that you can and enjoy all that is Milan.

Magnificent Works of Art in Milan

In the Santa Maria Della Grazie the Leonardo Da Vinci painting of The Last Supper, a mural depicting the moment Jesus announces that one of his disciples will betray him. ?It is a remarkable that this painting can still be seen after all the troubled times it has come through. ?After remarkable restoration ?this magnificent fresco can be seen in full colour. ?A time slot to visit has to be booked. ?The modest but exquisite collection at the Pinacoteca di Brera art museum covers works by major Italian artists from the 13th to the 20th centuries. Highlights include Mantegna’s Dead Christ, a moving Piet? by Giovanni Bellini, Piero della Francesca’s Virgin and Child with Saints and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus. Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese can be seen here. There’s also a studio of plaster casts and drawings, and contemporary works, thanks to its wonderful study collection.

Duomo of Milan

The amazing sight of the Duomo of Milan towering over the Plazza del Duomo. ?This huge church took 500 years to complete, has 135 spires and 3500 statues!!! ?To get the best view ever take the elevator to the roof and if it’s a clear day you an see the Alps! ?On the roof brings you closer to the Madonnina a gilded copper figure of Mary on the highest spire of the Duomo. ?A nail, allegedly from the Cross of Christ hangs at the apex of the vaulted roof of the Apse. ?Annually on a Saturday nearest to September 14 the archbishop retrieves the nail which is then exhibited at the altar until the following Monday when it is placed back up in the ceiling of the church. ?On the floor near the main entrance is a sundial placed so that it is struck by a ray of sunlight from a hole in the opposite wall. ?On June 21st, Summer Solstice, the ray of light strikes the bronze mark on the floor on December 21st, winter solstrice reaches the meridian. ?This sundial is so exact taht is was once used to set the clocks in the city.

Abbazia delle Tre Fontane

A haven of ancient, eucalyptus-scented green, with three churches commemorating the points where St Paul’s head supposedly bounced after it was severed from his body in AD 67. (Being a Roman citizen, Paul was eligible for the relatively quick and painless head-chop, as opposed to the long, drawn-out crucifixion.) These are the grounds of the Trappist monastery of Tre Fontane. ?The church of San Paolo delle Tre Fontane is said to be built on the spot where St Paul the apostle was executed; except for a column to which Paul is said to have been tied, all traces of the fifth-century church were done away with in 1599. Monks planted the eucalyptus trees in the 1860s, believing they would drive away the malarial mosquitoes; a liqueur is now brewed from the trees and sold in a little shop along with chocolate and remedies for all ills.

Museums in Milan

Castello Sforzesco – Inside are 12 little museums and archives tracing history from Paleolithic history to furniture of the 1950′s! ?Earmark mark a day to visit this place. ?Highlights include the Museo d’Arte e Scienza, a display of Da Vinci’s life; the Pallazzo d’Arte a fabulous showcase that once was home to the Triennale; the Pinacoteca di Castellano a gallery of early Renaissance works by Bellini and Mantegna and the Civiche Raccolte d’Arte Antica which is a sculpture gallery. ?Although Milan got its name from the Celts who arrived in about 388 BC, it was the Romans who left the oldest marks on the city. You can see their artefacts in several museums, including the Civici Musei del Castello and the Civico Museo Archeologico, and trace their presence in the city itself. The Pinacoteca and the Biblioteca Ambrosiana mark the location of the forum, the watchtowers are still intact in the garden of the Civico Museo Archeologico. On the via de Amicis, you can see the remains of the vast amphitheatre. The Columns of San Lorenzo, which were probably once part of a temple or ?bathhouse, stand 33 feet high on corso di Porta Ticinese. Along with the other monuments, they bring the splendour of Roman rule to life.

Shopping in Milan

The Quadrilatero d’Oro – The Rectangle of Gold is where to go to find the Milan’s designer boutiques all in one place. ?Such names as Armani, Chanel, Prada, Missoni and Versace can be found here. ?Even if you can’t afford the prices it’s still exciting to have a look in the windows at all this haute couture!!

For a spot of luxury shopping, look out for the glass-roofed arcade near the Duomo: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.The ceiling vaults are decorated with mosaics representing Asia, Africa, Europe and America and at ground level there are mosaics of more local concerns. It has a grand style that’s given a name of meaning Milan’s living room. Prada’s flagship store has been in business here since 1913, and it’s recently been joined by Louis Vuitton and Gucci.

Locals prefer the city’s many outlet stores to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and are all set to elbow their way through cut-price catwalk fashions to find the best bargains. Such treasures are found in the form of returns and factory seconds. The only snag is that even at discounts of 50-70%, prices can still make you wince. ?Refunds areuncommon, so try before you buy. Outletsare gathered around the corso Vittorio Emanuele II. For general shopping, try the establishment of Il Salvagente with three floors of top stuff for men, women and a kids’ section called Salvagente Bimbi. Ladies’ fashion bargains can be found at Dmagazine Outlet on the city’s main shopping street. Shopaholics should invest in a copy of Scoprioccasioni!! ?Just be sure that your hire car has a big enough boot to hold all your shopping!!!!

Pick a sunny day, leave your hire car parked not too farr away and hit the city’s best markets. The Fiera di Senigallia is the city’s top flea market. Its specialises in ’70s disco gear, CDs, Peruvian baby clothes and old comic books. The popular Papiniano stocks a mix of goods, including plants, shoes, homewares and linens, with the odd food stall thrown in. Be sure to use your elbows if you want to get near the cut-price clothes. Head up north to check out Isola, a bargain hunter’s delight that has ceramics, end-of-season clothes by Miss Sixty and offcuts of coloured Como silk. It’s also good for fresh fruits and veg, and ultra-cheap, ? la mode fashions. Fauch? is the favourite for cut-price designer shoes. On the last Sunday of each month, several hundred antiques dealers display their wares at the Antiquariato sul Naviglio Grande. It is a good source of design classics, ranging from furniture and silverware to vintage watches.

Opera at La Scala

If you can get hold of a ticket to La Scala, opera-lovers will hold you in higher esteem. La Scala has a massive stage, over ?2000 seats and about the best acoustics in the world and it as known the finest performers. Named after the Santa Maria della Scala, the 1381 church that once stood on the same spot, the opera has a dramatic past. It was opened in 1778 with an opera by Salieri, and ?great works by Puccini, Verdi and Bellini have premi?red here. It now stages cutting-edge opera. ?An operatic version of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth will debut at La Scala in 2011.

Drive to the Lake

Get out of the city to relax by the side of ?Milan’s man-made lake, Idroscalo. Originally intended to be a landing strip for sea planes in the WW2, it is now a stretch of water, forest and parkland covering three square miles. It’s a resort similar to those on ?Italy’s Mediterranean coastline, with its beach clubs, barbecue areas and the shore is lined with pedaloes. Kids love playing in the two big open-air swimming pools. ?If yours is an energeticholiday you can follow four-mile hiking and cycle path around the lake, ?kids can try the jungle gyms and skateboard ramps by Idroscalo’s western Ingresso Villetta entrance; there are teepees, swings and climbing frames for tots nearby.

Great Coffee in Milan

Milan is the city in which Starbucks is where the public can work, meet and relax. Italy’s caf?s already fill this role with gusto, local baristas remember you and start preparing your usual drink when you walk in. You can expect your caff? lungo macchiato or cappuccino scuro to be served fast and short. Around the Duomo, there’s lot of cafes to relax in. The fashion-conscious should try the Trussardi Caf? and Caff? Miani whereas opera lovers should try the quiet dignity of the Caff? Verdi. Around the Castello Sforzesco complex, the Bar Bianco is a popular place to drink a caff? macchiato while you make your plans for travelling around the area on a sunny day.

Eating Out

Taste of Milan – In Milan you can find the most wonderful creamy pastas. ?You can’t find a better place than Antica Trattoria della Pesa for Milanese food. ?The Funghi Porcini is fantastic, the Costoletta alla Milanese is almost too big for the dish it’s served on. ?There are of course many many great places to eat at any time of the day in Milan. ?The Alberto Ciarla for superb fish and seafood. ?The Antico Caffe Greco where once such celebrities as Casanova, Wagner, Baudelaire, Shelley and Byron passed the time of day. ?Cavour 313 has a very friendly atmosphere even if the decor is a tad gloomy, great wines and great snacks are reflected in the popularity of this wine bar. ? Da Francesco is “the” place if you want a tasty pizza but arrive early or you’ll have to queue! ?If for lunch you just fancy a good old fashioned sandwich forget it! ?Sandwich yes! Old fashioned NO!! ?Visit bar della Crocetta and drool over more than 100 panini fillings from venison to prosciutto. At De Santis ?they have about twice as many delicious sandwiches. ?You may like to find and try panzerotti – dough stuffed with tomato and mozzarella which is then folded and fried. mmmmmmm

Spa

Have a Spa Day – Tired of driving around or shopping or sightseeing????? ?Treat yourself to a pampering session at one of Milan’s Spas. ?Be it fashionista style at Lepri owned by fabrizio Lepri the hairstylist or at the Bulgari Hotel or at ESPA a small spa inside a boutique or go back in time to the Terme Milano where a day pass admits you to steambaths a sauna and open air pools. ?Don’t forget to put your bathing suit in the car before you head here.

Canal Cruise

Milan is a city of canals and what better way to take a breask from driving and shopping and unwind on a gentle cruise along the canal ways, taking in the ancient washouses of Vicolo dei Lavandai and San Cristoforo, the Scodellino bridge and the Darsena port, built in 1603. ?Along the banks of the rivers Ticino & Po you can see boutiques, antique shops and night spots.

In Milan you will be spoiled for choice no matter what you do or wherever you go to. ?The choices are endless and all you have to do is drive from the airport to begin your memorable stay in Milan.
